Busy at work. I can't wait to share my most recent family shoot with you. Moms, dads, children, grandparents, and babies--captured together--in one afternoon. Sounds like a day at the beach, doesn't it? Well, it was! For now, so many photos to edit. But, how can I complain when my "cubicle" looks like this?

Yes, that is Nicholas above. He was invited to come along. After taking this lighting test shot, I knew the rest of the day would be a success!

An Unexpected Kindness

In all his perfection, he traveled from across the globe, and completed his expedition upon my doorstep on this otherwise dreary afternoon.

I am unable to discern whether it was he that made my heart sing, in all his glorious reds and hippo-ness.

Was it her, the friend whom I have never met face-to-face, who knows my heart so well that she organized his journey?

Thank you so very much, Rikki. Each time I catch a glimpse of “Little Re(i)d,” I find myself smiling. Yes, he is a perfect reminder of my “Hippo.” And, of my friend on the other side of the world.

I truly hope we meet one day. Perhaps the next journey could be yours.

His Heart

“How far away is my heart, Mommy?” Nicholas asks me.

“Your heart is inside your body, baby. It isn’t far.”

“Yes, it is far. It’s very very far away. That’s why Heller is far away.”

“Heller is far away, to you, because you can’t see him. You can’t see him because he is in Heaven. But, he is also in your heart because you love him. We say, ‘he is in our hearts’ because our hearts feel our love, and we love him forever.”

Nicholas is insistent. “My heart is far far away. Very far. Further than the farthest far.”

I try again.

“When we love somebody, or something, we say that it is in our heart. It means, our heart holds a part of that thing forever and ever. You are in my heart, Jenny is in my heart, Daddy is in my heart. It means we love someone.”

Nicholas gets the final words. “Well, I love my stuffed animals, but they are not in my heart. They are at home, on my bed.”

I’ll try again tomorrow.

These boys are fierce! They’re the roughest, toughest soccer team around! So, when it came time to choosing a team name, these fearsome four-year-olds didn’t mess around. Their motto—“Mess with us, and you won’t forget it!” This may be "Bitty Sports," but there's nothing bitty about the Orange ELEPHANTS!

Yeah...we don’t get it either.

Silhouette Photography Fun

I particularly remember the fun I had as a child, making silhouette portraits from cutouts of black paper, and framing them for my mom. Even more fun, I discovered, is being the mom and dressing up your entire family for a silhouette portrait photo shoot. Over the course of the last few weeks, I have enjoyed participating in a 30 Day Photo Challenge. Today's shoot, as you can see, called for silhouettes! Easy peasy mac-n-cheesy!

As dynamic as they appear, it is hard to believe that a silhouette capture is probably one of the easiest photo light tricks. Simply find a location that offers little background obstruction, position your subject between the you and the light, and voila--silhouettes!

I Heart Faces - Vivid - To Infinity and Beyond!

They meet their instructor along the side of the pool, and their lesson begins promptly at 6:45. Moms and Dads watch from afar as they gather together along the water's edge on blankets, towels, and whatever empty chairs they are lucky enough to locate. This is no “mommy and me” class. These boys are in the big league now.

First, the instructor lines her little eels along the edge of the pool wall, securely fastened into what she playfully calls their “space backpacks.” She begins her address on the rules of safety. They listen. Next, she proceeds to demonstrate the goal. They watch. Finally, she pulls each boy into the water, one at a time. They do.

I am intrigued by the instructor’s ability to capture the focus of these boys for the full half hour. Whether she is teaching them one on one, or in a group, these boys offer her their undivided attention. They seem to know that this is important. I am focused too. I am thankful for my camera’s zoom.

Pleasantly exhausted after a good swim, my boy goes to bed early on lesson night. I am able to sit down and browse through my photo captures of the day. In these quiet moments, I can vividly see the future as I imagine he sees the future.

I pretend to hear my little guy talking to his friend. “One day,” he says, “we are going to cross the pool!” Yes, my little one, even without your backpack, I know you will go “to infinity and beyond!”

I Heart Faces - From a Distance

Recently, my family was blessed with the opportunity to take a Disney Cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. For several days, we sailed the ocean blue. Each morning, my daughter and I would order room service, and sit on the verandah of our room and watch the water go by. It was magical!
The most fun mornings, however, were those when our ship would arrive in port, and pull up alongside other cruise ships. With only a pier between us, we had the pleasure of spying on neighboring decks and balconies.

"Check out their lounge chairs!"
"Do you see the size of that balcony?! Is that an outside shower?!"
"Look at that cute couple in their matching bath robes."
"Seriously? Does he have to drink his coffee, on his balcony, in his speedo?"

I am sparing us all the Speedo shot. (Of course I had to take it. Don't judge me. You would too.) But, I really love this (distance) capture of several sailors taking a morning break aboard the Holland America cruise ship.

"Look Jenny! Sailors! There's your boyfriend."

And SEW, I Try Again

I am still attempting to sew a masterpiece. I must admit, I am quite happy with the outcome of this one. But, there is still work to be done.

My original goal--to sew matching newsboy caps for Nicholas and his cousin, Teagan--sent me on a pattern search. As you can imagine, I was delighted when I discovered this magnificent tutorial on You Tube.

My first attempt was quite successful (for Teagan), but Nicholas's hat (exactly the same) would only fit on, well, Teagan. So, I decided to try again.

I had some leftover giraffe material that I used to make Teagan's towel. (BTW, he wasn't a fan.) So, I enlarged the newsboy cap pattern and began again.

For those of us, like me, with large heads, my hat is perfect! For those of you, with ~~puny~~ average sized heads, I will have to give it another go.

See? Not a fan.

Baby Girl "J" is Number Four!

Of course, we are convinced that she will have fewer legs and less fur than her "siblings," Dory, Nemo, and Squirt. At first glance, you would think they stole the entire show, but when you take another look at this beautiful mommy and darling dad, you will see that this shoot did not go to the dogs.

Thank you both for allowing me to capture such a wonderful time in your lives, and for enduring the heat. I cannot wait to meet Baby "J" when she arrives!

I always swore I wouldn't encourage this shot when capturing moms-to-be. It seemed so unnatural. I equated it to telling a child to "Say Cheese," while trying to capture a genuine expression. Can we say Cheese Face!?

But someone--I'm not naming names, but you know who you are--yelled, "Make a heart on her belly with your hands!" seconds before the click.

This seemed to crack Mom up, and her spontaneous expression is priceless!

This little guy braved the great outdoors today. As he happily grazed upon my newly-sodded lawn, we gathered closely around him. Our neighborhood friend asked, "What do we do if a hawk or owl comes?" Jenny and I looked at one another. "Wave farewell!" we both replied.

Because we love our Dexter so much, the comment encouaged us to take him in shortly thereafter. And, it had nothing to do with the fact that he was beginning to eat my new hibiscus plant.

Although he has been preparing for this moment from the very instant he heard the words, “It’s a Boy!” Daddy clearly isn’t ready. You see, we have come to that bitter-sweet slice in our life where Daddy finds himself on the opposite side of the fence. It’s called Little League, and the rules are clear. NO PARENTS ON THE FIELD OR IN THE DUGOUT.

(As I stood beside him, documenting my little guy’s momentous t-ball beginnings for a photo series I like to call, “Through the Fence,” I looked over and found that, in the moment, Daddy’s face told a better story.)

2 Kids/12 Times/12 Colors

You thought I forgot, didn't you? I promised 2 kids/12 times /12 colors and I completely let February slip by. Right? Wrong.

Alas, February (and now March) proved to be quite busy. In between t-ball, school, vacation planning, portfolio building, and doctor visits (see below), I found very little time to shoot two!

We couldn't decide whether this shoot was a blue or brown one, so we will determine that in the coming months. We also couldn't decide whether this impromptu shoot at Nicholas's four-year doctor checkup qualified as a "2/12/12." Because it is now March, we decided it does!

How many big sisters do you know that will climb right up on the table with you for your doctor checkup? Nicholas is one lucky kid, and he knows it!

If she could have, Jenny would have taken Nicholas's six shots for him that day. No--not really.

Best Money Ever Spent - Strider Bike!

The Strider™ PREbike website claims, "Bike riding becomes a breeze when you teach your child balance and coordination before pedaling." I am pretty confident this is true, but we haven't yet converted to a pedal-less bike. Our Strider Rider is so much fun!

After several attempts to circle the neighborhood for our evening walk, with Nicholas riding his training-wheeled bicycle, we gave up and encouraged him to walk with us. The over sized bike with trainers was cumbersome and slow, and managed to get stuck in minor cracks and tip over at a moment's notice. Nicholas didn't seem to mind putting the bike aside. In truth, he wasn't having much fun anyway.

In November, his grandparents bought him a Strider for his 4th birthday.

Day One with the Strider was slow-and-go. As with any bike, it took a little while to get used to. Day Two was better. We navigated the neighborhood, without any falls, but Nicholas remained tentative, and his feet mainly stayed on the ground. At the end of Day Two, we checked out videos at the Strider Bike website and Nicholas decided that he wanted to try to do "tricks." I told him we should give it try, so we headed right back outside and gathered up his bike.

Immediately, Nicholas walked his bike to the top of the driveway, lifted his feet, and glided to the bottom. My heart was in my throat as he hit the lip at the bottom of the driveway and seemed to lose balance for a moment. Without hesitation, Nicholas righted his wheels and continued his glide.

"Wow, Mommy! Did you see that 'trick'?!" he asked me.

He spent the rest of the day telling everyone what an amazing bike rider he was.

Balance AND confidence with one blow!

I Heart Faces - Anything But a Face!

This week's I Heart Faces challenge is Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes...Anything but a Face. I am so excited to submit Nicholas's Chalky Chucks. This capture goes down as one of my all time favorites.

I captured the photo after reading Chris Orwig's Visual Poetry book. If you haven't read it, it's a must! After I uploaded the print to Flickr, the photographer/author, himself, commented that he "loved" this "No Faces" shot--specifically the moment and colors. How cool is that?! A poster-sized version hangs on Nicholas's bedroom wall.

About the photo:

You will notice that a three-year-old Nicholas is standing in his "house." This was the first time that I realized my little guy may have artistic ability. Perhaps one day he will join the ranks of 3-d Street Painter, Tracy Lee Stum. For now, I am enjoying his pretty accurate diagrams of our house, roller coasters, animals, and various locations around town.

And when he uses chalk as his medium, I actually take pleasure is scrubbing his knees.

Photostory Friday - Those Sweet, Final Moments

Side-by-side they stood, in all their sugary goodness. Having witnessed the devouring of each of their friends, they knew they were the fortunate ones. They also knew, with that boy in the house, their time together wouldn’t last.

And so it came without warning—the moment they feared.

A pause. He looked innocent enough.

And then…gone in an instant.

There she stood, all alone. Her small, sweet heart pounded with anticipation.

She could feel him eyeing her. If only she wasn’t so delicious.

Suddenly, she was in his hands. He was inhaling her delightful scent. She was no longer proud of her perfection.

He unwrapped her slowly, as if savoring each moment.

Suddenly, it was over. Her heart in his hand, the only thing left.

Her heart—a toy with which he played.

And those who witnessed the moments, would later report, “The boy was not sorry for what he had done.”

Nicholas truly enjoyed his first miniature golf experience at a recent birthday party for his great friend, Zachary. Perhaps I will post Zachary's photos after his mom gets to see them first! We knew the course was close to our home. (Who could miss the awful blue water as you pass by it on the street?) We never knew how much fun it was! Expect more putt-putt in our future!

Inspired - Something a Little Different

The above photo and story were inspired by yesterday's church sermon on relationships. In actuality, "the woods" represents circumstances in which we relate to others, and the misunderstandings that arise when we remove ourselves from The Path (or remove God from the picture). We often define our pain by our circumstances, and choose to react as a result of the enemy.

If only we stop reacting, and start receiving, we can overcome that which pushes us further into "the woods". The only thing we can change is ourselves, and the only way to do it is with God.

As Valentines Day approaches, I am thinking about relationships. I am striving to meet my circumstances with positive reactions. I am continuing my ultimate search for sunshine. As always, I hope you will join me.

Welcome Dexter

Members of our household know, there is no free room and board. We are happy to have you, but you will be required to earn your keep. The cost? You will be subjected to random photo shoots, to which you will have no objections. That's right! There are NO FREE PASSES.

Meet Dexter. He came to us a few nights ago--innocent and unaware.

His wonderful and loving personality ensured that he quickly made friends.

And, he made himself right at home in the snack department. (This photographer did her best to ignore the fact that he rapidly and impetuously ate the perfect stem and leaves before I could capture them.)

It was when he stood, eating his strawberry, that he suddenly became aware. This was not a picnic.

And although the props appeared tasty...

There was actual work to be done.

Though Dexter is quite willing (as long as he receives an adequate number of strawberries and such), I find that there is much work to be done in this little guy's future. He seems to be a natural, with various poses including, Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Ferrari, alas, Magnum will need some work for this new member of Zooland.

I am confident, if he keeps up his hurdles, he should be well in shape for his next shoot!

2 Kids/12 Times/12 Colors

The end of 2010 found me desperately trying to fill a photo album with photos of my children (taken together) over the course of the last year. I found that it could not be done. I was forced to settle for separate, yet similar, captures. It seems that their fourteen-year age difference does not contradict the definition of sibling rivalry. I could see it in their photos--my children each competing to define who they are as a person, and each wanting to show that they are separate from their sibling.

Well, that just would not do.

It has been said that our siblings are the people we practice on. They teach us fairness, cooperation, kindness, and compassion. Jenny is beginning her adult life this year. Nicholas barely knows the joys of being a full-fledged kid. They are still learning and growing together, and I intend to capture these moments while I can.

If I had the pleasure of raising them together as small children, I confess, I would have dressed them the same and paraded them around in all their cuteness. Sometimes, it happens naturally, and I secretly love it. For my project, it will happen at least once a month.

So begins a new project--2 Kids/12 Times/12 Colors.

This is not a new concept. I admit, I borrowed it from several members of my photographer community. Thank you. I don’t know what I would do without your inspiration.

On Pin Trading and Theme Selection

Our Disney Pin collections were always themed as follows:

Jenny kept on the lookout for Tinkerbell and other fairies. Ford let the kids find Pluto, Goofy, and other dogs for him. As for me, I searched for pins that reminded me of my own Disney days, scuba diving, and memories of my kids. Having a theme made it fun and easy to decide when to make a trade.

But, Heller’s was always my favorite theme. It still makes me smile. He never seemed to have a problem finding the perfect pins for his lanyard. The day he made his theme decision, I knew I had a smartest kid on the block.

“So Heller?” we asked. “Did you decide what pins to collect?”

“Yep.” He responded without a bit of hesitation. “My theme is pins I like.”

80s Nite

Tonight is the night! Thanks to a well-planned Christmas gift from my sister, Ashley, we are going to see Rock of Ages! For those of you who don't know what it is, here is a bio.

In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small-town girl met a big-city dreamer - and in L.A.'s most legendary rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the '80's. It's Rock of Ages, a hilarious, feel-good love story told through the hit songs of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more.

A few nights ago, Jenny and I decided to "get into the groove" by tapping into the spirit of the 80s. There is no mention of Madonna in the bio. Really? I can't imagine the 80s without the Material Girl.

Without further ado, here is my very own Material Girl.
As a side note: Does anybody know what happened to Madonna's original 80s videos? In an effort to "set the mood," I attempted to YOUTUBE the oldies but goodies. It seems Madonna as recreated her videos, and nothing is available from the actual 80s. Believe me, Madonna still looks pretty good, but it isn't the stuff this 80s girl grew up with.

Two-Wheeler

And, that was the very first start of it all.
The next thing I knew, in the blink of an eye,

And now, here you are, on a bike with two wheels.
Striding, then gliding, and lifting your heels.
Your balance—magnificent.
You are fearless and fast.
And, I find myself wishing this moment could last.
But, I know you’ll keep growing, with each passing day.
And, I know God’s design says it’s perfect this way.
So for now I will store in my memory’s heart
The gift I am given, as I witness each start.
And to my story, one day, you will listen in awe,
As it begins with a baby, before he could crawl.

Costume Night!

I remember playing dress-ups as a little girl. Perhaps it is the drama queen in me, but it was always one of my most favorite things to do. I remember scarf or pom pom wigs and my mom's old bridesmaid dresses. I am blown away by the options that are available to little girls now. Just walk down any little girl aisle in a Target toy section, and you will see what I mean. Wigs, shoes, dresses, makeup--their options are limitless. I can only imagine the productions my parents would have endured.

Little boy options are fewer. That is where the Halloween costume closet comes in handy.

And, while we were sharing costumes, Nicholas thought a little "show and tell" of his most favorite Christmas gifts would be appropriate as well. Santa got off easy with this little "Puppy in a Cage" request. If this was Nicholas's only gift, he would have been quite content.

And, there was no better gift under the tree than a hand-made quilt from Nicholas's Mapa.

I Heart Faces - Smile

Twenty-Eleven - Ready or Not!

Twenty-eleven snuck up on me when I was totally looking the other way. I am not certain how it happened, but I think it all started with Santa. See, I was good last year. Santa knew it. He checked his list. Good/Very Good/Hayley/Photography/ Thingamajigs and Doohickeys. Santa’s list was in order. But, somewhere along the way, Santa forgot to stock the sleigh. Enter Christmas morning. “Dear Hayley”, the notes began, “here is your IOU.” Well, not exactly, but you get the idea.

Add to Santa’s slip, a New Year’s Eve bon fire turned forest fire. Where was my camera? Tucked neatly inside its bag. FAIL. No neato photos to share or remember it by. (In truth, I am thankful it was put out before I could even consider attaching my lens.) And, kudos to hubby, who is proud to say, "I was a first responder!"

Did I mention my external flash broke a few days prior to Christmas? No? Good, because I would have been lying. It wasn’t my flash at all. No, it wasn’t until I ordered, paid for, and received a brand new (though undeniably better) flash that I discovered it was my camera that was broken. Ugh. So, I entered the New Year without my doodads from Santa, and a broken camera. Happy New Year!

Before you start to get teary-eyed from my stories of woe, I am here to tell you that things are looking up. Just take a look at these baby browns.

I took this shot, today, with my broken camera, just before we traveled to the repair shop—yes, the repair shop—where they fixed my camera and shined it up like new. I can't wait to try it out with my new flash.

And, while we are enjoying the brown hues of this photo, I’d like to mention a new journey I will be taking with Marta Locklear, as she explores hues and textures in a 52 week project. This week's hue is brown. Check it out.

Finally, I want to share some exciting news. Lola is here! Santa delivered on one of his IOUs! My beautiful camera bag just arrived and she is as marvelous as I knew she would be. Take a look.

We're ready--Lola, sparkly camera, more amazing Santa gifts, and me--to take on Twenty-eleven. Great things await us. I hope you will join me.

Dear Mom,

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Papa isn’t the only one who thinks so.

A few weeks ago, after spending the day with you, Jenny commented, “I felt like I was with you all day, Mom. Mapa would say something, or do something, and I would think, ‘Yep! That’s just like my Mom.’” What a lovely compliment. I can’t think of anyone else I would strive to be like.

I took thousands of photos this year, but have so few of you. Of course, I snuck in a few. One day, your grandchildren will cherish them.

I hope they will also learn to value another trait I may have received from you—tough love. Since I was a little girl, you have always been honest in your opinions (photography included). If it wasn’t good, (if we didn’t give it our best) it didn’t go on the refrigerator. But, when it did, we knew we could accomplish greatness.

Gone are the refrigerator days. With all the miles between us, and separate refrigerators, we have to make adjustments. Enter Facebook.

When you selected THIS photo as your Facebook profile pic, MY photo, and a photo of YOU, I felt prouder than a kid in front of her very own refrigerator art display.

As a result, out of the thousands of photos I took in 2010, this one stands at the top! I call it “Who Loves Ya Babe?"

I Heart Faces - Pets (Something Different)

The Foreman. The Alpha Dog. The Senior in Charge.

Sam was Heller's dog. They had an understanding. Sam belonged to Heller. Heller belonged to Sam. When the lights went out at the end of the day, we could always find Sam lying in Heller's doorway. It was obvious who held Sam's heart.

In 2007, when we lost our Sunshine, Sam lost his too. I think he decided that no other little boy could ever measure up to Heller, and so he decided not to have a boy. The only other little boy in our house confuses him. Nicholas, a puppy-crazed boy, is often a little over-enthusiastic, loud, and rough (not this old dog's favorite things). So, Sam spends most of his days avoiding Nicholas.

Today was different. Maybe it was the cold weather. Or, perhaps Sam was inspired by the jingle jangle of his holiday trim. Today, Sam found the boy interesting.

Today's theme at I Heart Faces is Pets. I am sure you expected to see Nicholas with Meme (his usual side-kick), but today I am trying something different--just like Sam.

Dear Lord,

I was making my list the other day. You know the one. I like to call it my “Yule Log.” It reminds me of all of those things that I must do in order to prepare for the approaching holiday season. There is the decorating, the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, parties, and even the yearly visit to Santa Claus.

Every activity had a time and a place. Everything was scheduled perfectly. And, I was significantly proud that I would be able to accomplish it all before the clock struck midnight on the last day of the year.

As I reread my list, Lord, I found something missing. Not only were YOU not at the top of my list, but YOU weren’t on the list at all! I was so wrapped up in paper, tape, and ribbon, that I forgot the most important gift of all—the One whose birthday we are celebrating. I was so tangled up in buying lights and decorations, I forgot the Light of the World.

Remind us, Lord, when making our lists this season, to place YOU at the top, to prepare our hearts for YOU, and to visit YOU first.

You, Lord, are the meaning of Christmas.

Do you have one of those neighbors? We do! In fact, we are blessed with one on each side. When Christmas time rolls around, we often say, “We are surrounded by Griswalds.” What does this mean? It means that our neighbors pull out all the stops when it comes to hanging lights, and oozing good cheer. From reindeer to candy canes, and everything in between, their homes sing with spirit (one of them literally sings).

We are fortunate to have neighbors like these. Not just at Christmas time, but the whole year through, their hearts are always full of cheerfulness and good will. They are so full; in fact, we think they simply burst open at Christmas onto their lawns.

We consider ourselves lucky to be nestled within such joyfulness.

All is Calm...

I might not send Christmas cards this year. Truly.

No, I am not a scrooge. Trust me when I tell you, I made my list. I checked it…ummm…more than twice. And, Christmas cards were right up there on Page 3. But, the days are rapidly flying by, and I am starting to feel a little bit snowed under.

Today’s kindness reminder at Because of Heller is, Be Kind to Yourself. And, I think I am going to try to practice what I preach. This year, I am going to have a Reality-based Holiday. I’m ready to lose the expectations. That means, I won’t make Good Housekeeping’s Most Beautifully Decorated Homes list, but perhaps I also won’t be the highest strung decoration in the house either.

My husband will thank me. My kids will thank me. And, their smiles will shine so brightly that nobody will notice the house anyway.

Anyway, this year, I might not send Christmas cards.

Note to my family: This doesn’t let you off the hook for holiday photos.

Today is Photo Story Friday. Today, instead of telling a story through photos, I am sharing a photo of a story teller. Mr. Bear has been telling the story of "The Night Before Christmas" in our house for the last few years. Before we got Mr. Bear, however, we had an even more amazing story teller in our home--Heller.

At the age of three, Heller was able to recite "The Night Before Christmas" to anyone who would listen. His ability to recite the story came from his love of having the books read to him from his "The Night Before Christmas" book collection.

In addition to sharing this photo, I am sharing a kindness idea. And, I am reminding you to share kindness Because of Heller on December 22nd. One way to share kindness is through book reading and donating books. Once again, you can read more about Heller and kindness day here.

So, December is here. And December 22 is quickly approaching. I am so appreciative of those who have come to capture sunshine with me this year. This month, I hope to bring more kindness and sunshine Because of Heller. This month, I will dedicate to kindness in memory of my little boy, Heller, who left us in 2007 to join his Father in Heaven, but who left behind so much sunshine and kindness because he was here.

I hope you will join me at Spreading Random Acts of Kindness Because of Heller, as well as here at Capturing Sunshine. You may find duplicate posts and messages, as we work to spread the word. Please feel free to share along with us.

Hey! Did you hear? We got snow flurries in Florida today! Some people call them snow "Flakes!" But, the only real "Flake" in this photo, of course, is Nicholas.

Seriously, Nicholas worked very hard to prepare our yard for the holiday season.

He worked up quite a sweat--literally!

What? You don't believe that our weather is cold enough for snow? Tell that to Escar ho ho ho, who needs a hat to keep him warm.

Don't worry. It wasn't all work and no play. Jenny stopped to smell the flowers.

Did she know they weren't real? It's hard to say, and I never asked her. She was too busy helping Nicholas build our snowman.

Christmas is coming, ready or not. When you live in Florida, it's hard to tell for sure. Sometimes, you have to help it along. Although it may seem less than genuine, we want you all to know, our cheer is sincere!

It's all about the Popcorn!

A chipmonk-cheeked, contented Nicholas sits with his paper-bag-filled, movie theater popcorn as he watches his afternoon shows on what he refers to as the "rectangle" TV. Yep! It's almost like the actual movie theater.

"No fair!" claims Nicholas as he states his case for his need to view the latest Harry Potter movie in lieu of staying home with his very favorite babysitter. Has Nicholas read the books? Nope. Does he even know who Harry Potter is? Not a bit. But, what Nicholas DOES know, is that movies=popcorn.

So, what is a mom to do? I'll let you in on my secret. I simply buy the large popcorn for hubby, Jenny, and me, and when the movie ends, we grab a refill on the way out the door. It's a total win-win!!

Photostory Friday - The "Thing"

We always wondered if Nicholas would have a “thing.” We would make a purchase of some blanket, stuffed toy, or other object and think, “Could this be it? Do we want this to be ‘the thing’?” We tried to encourage some of our favorite selections, keeping in mind that Linus has been carrying his blanket around for more than 50 years. Of course, it would never be our decision. It would be entirely up to Nicholas.

In the last few months, a certain someone has become an important member of our family. “Whiskers” has joined us on many an outing. Nicholas, the consummate puppy wannabe, has recently grown very fond of several of his puppy friends including, Big Ears, Red Bow, Red Dog, and Red Nose, but Whiskers reigns supreme because he was made with love, by Nicholas.

Meet Whiskers.

A single string dangling from his face gives Whiskers his name.

Sometimes, Whiskers forgets that we should "stick together." Then, we have to go back for him.

Whiskers smiles for Mommy's camera.

Nicholas's sister, Jenny, bought Whiskers a new sweatshirt to keep warm during our nighttime walks on the golf course.

Whiskers loves the trolly--almost as much as Nicholas.

Whiskers cracks Nicholas up when he yells, "Go Faster! I love the wind in my ears!"

This was Jamie's mantra last weekend at 6:30 AM, as she stood in the freezing cold, waiting to begin the Alzheimer's Memory Walk. She had come into town specificially to walk with others to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research.

While she was in town, Jamie thought it would be fun to do a mini photo session. I like those who support important causes, so how could I refuse? She deserved it!

This Was the Noblest Roman of them All!

My Mapa and Papa went to Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and brought me back a Halloween Costume. To be honest, I was a little unsure about the "Halloween" thing, but Mommy said I could "play pretend and get candy," and I wanted to be a puppy. Who was this Julius Caesar guy anyway?

"No one is so brave that he is not disturbed by something unexpected." ~ Julius Caesar

Well, alright, he did have this really cool sword. I liked the sword.

And, I really liked the hat too. That surprised Mommy, who thought I wouldn't wear it. But, at the end of the night, when she asked me if I wanted to take it off, I told her, "No. It keeps my head warm."

Like I said, I really wanted to be a puppy. Then, Mommy found a costume for Meme. Meme is my puppy. Meme was going to be a Roman Soldier too! I guess if Meme wasn't going to be a puppy, then I didn't have to be one either.

Meme needed a little bit of persuasion.

I promised her that I would always have her back.

And that, together, we would be a force to be reckoned with. That made her proud.

Mommy said I was an awesome Julius Caesar. So did all the people who gave me candy! Thank you Mapa and Papa!

I Heart Faces Brings Awareness to Breast Cancer

This is no monkey business.

In addition, about 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.

These numbers are staggering. And, when I think about the many many children left without their mothers as a result of this horrible disease, I almost cannot bear it.
On a positive note, at this time there are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and we can raise this number! We can! Through education and awareness and the dedication of many individuals and organizations throughout the world, we will beat this disease!

Hot Pink Housewives is one such organization that I hope you will check out! Co-founded by my friend, and a Breast Cancer Survivor, MaryAnn, Hot Pink Housewives is a Facebook group "created to promote Breast Cancer awareness through love and support."

Note to my sister, Ashley, who walked in a Breast Cancer Awareness 5K this weekend: I'm very proud of you!

The Jungle

Nicholas: "Are we in the jungle?"
Daddy: "Well...technically...no, we are not in the jungle."
Meredith: "It looks like a jungle."
Daddy: "No, it isn't a jungle. If this were a jungle, there would be no road here for us to walk on."
Nicholas and Meredith: "Oh."
Meredith: "There isn't a road over there. Is that the jungle?"
Daddy: "No. But, it is kind of like the jungle, because there is no place to walk, and it is filled with trees and animals."

A wayward bike rider flies by. Only by the skin of our teeth do we remain unscathed. As a metaphor, jungle often refers to situations that are unruly or lawless, or where the only law is perceived to be "survival of the fittest." Of course, pedestrians should have the right-of-way, but the riders on our "jungle path" seem to be oblivious. The rider's mother laughs out loud. "Oops!"

Me: "This place is a jungle. Hold hands and stick together."

Photostory Friday - The Train Station

Mapa was coming to visit on the train! I was so excited. Mommy said to "grab my train hat," and get ready to go. I was ready in a flash and insistant that we leave right away.

So, we arrived early. Very early.

If you know my mom, then you know she had her camera in tow. She always has her camera. So, I agreed to a few shots. I even flashed her my pearly whites without protesting.

I couldn't wait to see my Mapa. Since Mom was "picturing," and my sister was texting, I kept lookout. I didn't want to miss Mapa's train arrival.

My sister stopped texting for a few minutes to smile for Mommy too. Well, a half-smile anyway.

You know, waiting is hard.

I think my sister thought so too.

Was Mapa's train EVER going to arrive?

Suddenly, we heard the announcer say that Mapa's train was coming.

I got ready.

And, after a little bit more waiting (ok, a LOT more waiting), Mapa was finally here!! I held my sign high so Mapa wouldn't miss me, but Mommy thinks she probably didn't need the sign. She says that my brilliant smile could have lit the way!

Mommy says that next time, I get to go on the train to visit Mapa. I can't wait!! In the meantime, I rode the trolly. I suspect Mommy will post those photos soon.

Beautiful (cooler) weather prompted another walk on the golf course at sunset. I am usually disappointed when there are no clouds to reflect the colors of the closing day. But this evening's family walk proved to be beauty-full! I love October!

Nicholas: Can Whiskers come for a walk with us?
Me: No, because I will be the one who ends up carrying him.
Nicholas: Please. Whiskers wants to go for a walk with us.
Me: Whiskers doesn't walk. Again, I don't want to be the one to carry Whiskers.
Nicholas: Mommy, Please can Whiskers come on the walk with us?
Me: What did Mommy say?
Nicholas: (Silence)
Nicholas: (Already on the walk with Whiskers in his arms.) Mommy, can Whiskers come for a walk with us?
Me: Really Nicholas? Really? Well, obviously we aren't going to go back home with him. We'll miss the sunset.

So Whiskers walked with us. And, shared the sunset. And behaved himself in Nicholas's arms.

I Heart Faces - Sidewalk Chalk

This is an oldie, but it's still a favorite. Nichoals was serious about his sidewalk chalk that day. "I make our house, Mommy!" he told me.

I will always remember the day. One of my most favorite photos ever came from that shoot! Nicholas's post-chalking jeans and bright yellow sneakers makes a magnificent 20x30 poster, and now hangs over his bed.

7 Random Things

A little less than 10,000 miles away, I have a friend who “speak-a my language.” Though, we have never met face-to-face, I know she hates vegemite. Can you imagine an Australian hating vegemite? I guess it is possible. If Men At Work are accurate in their song lyrics, however, then in Australia “women glow.” If my friend Rikki represents all women in Australia, then Men At Work doesn’t lie. Rikki Glows! Just check out her blog, Rikki Reid Photography, and you will see what I mean.

This week, Rikki passed the 7 Random Things Kreativ Blogger Meme on to me. And, I get to tell you 7 Random Things about myself. So, here goes:

1. Celebrations surround me on my birthday each year. Tequila and Tacos flow, because my birthday falls on Cinco De Mayo.

2. Speaking of Tequila, I can’t tolerate even the smell. No margaritas for me.

3. However, pass the salt please, because I happen to salt everything else. Pizza, watermelon, soups, you name it.

4. Not cherries though, or apples, or carrots, or peaches, because I am allergic to those.

5. Here I am at number 5. I could take this time to mention that the number 5 happens to be my most favorite number in the world. You could say I have loved that number since the day I was born—5/5.

6. That was also the day my mom named me, Hayley. In kindergarten, I decided I hated my name. Nobody else was ever named Hayley. And, the lady on Romper Room never saw me—not once! Of course, I grew to love its originality as I grew older. Then, I grew older still. Now, Hayleys fill the kindergartens.

7. Finally, speaking of kindergarten, here is something random. The year I entered kindergarten, my darling husband entered his freshman year of college. Yikes!

Whew! Now that my head is spinning with randomness, I am passing it along to some of my favorite bloggers.

I Heart Faces - SMIRK

I truly heart this face! Today, Nicholas celebrates his 50th appearance in an I Heart Faces post!

On March 3, 2009, I first entered Nicholas’s “Messy Face” into an I Heart Faces’ weekly challenge. Since, I have posted 68 entries. The first 48 submissions were posted on my original blog, When I Grow Up. Thanks, in part, to I Heart Faces, I grew. Now, you will find all of my future entries here at Heller Ritz Photography’s Capturing Sunshine.

You might say I remain joyfully committed to "face"ing each of the demanding challenges that I Heart Faces throws my way.

“Demanding?” you say, “Really?” You try capturing Autumn Beauty in Florida. (I placed in the top ten in that one by the way.) And let’s talk about sun flare…ugh. (I think I may be a little bit blind now.)

The very most challenging captures; however, are the ones where I insisted that Nicholas participate. He’s the little guy that you will see attached to my knees most days, so that is why he gets the task. And, ~~sometimes~~ most times, I Heart Faces photo shoot is a task that he just isn’t up to.

“Wait!” you say. “Then how did he make the cut 50 times?” Well, it goes something like this:

Each photo challenge offered by I Heart Faces presents an opportunity for inspiration. With a goal in mind, I set out “on assignment.” After shooting for a while, I start to get some of those smirky “Mom, just take the picture and be done with it” faces that you see above. (For example: I took this photo during I Heart Faces’ “Yellow” week. Of course, you can’t see it in black and white, but there were yellow goggles, a yellow tube, and even a yellow flower during the shoot.)

Then, photos such as these are saved for a rainy day.

I believe that true smirk comes from within, and cannot be set up, so there will be no shoot this week, Nicholas. But alas, I am prepared. So, here is your 50th appearance!

I Heart Faces - Vroom Vroom

Cuddle Bus.

A bedroom filled with primary colors and vehicles galore--Heller's three-year-old bedroom.

The "Vehicle Collection" for a child's room was our favorite motif in the store.
Of course, we purchased the wall clings, comforter, sheets, and sham.
We grabbed the lamp shade and car shelves too.
A hard, stuffed bus seemed the least necessary addition to the room's decor.
The bus remained on the shelf.

"Mommy," Heller told me as I tucked him into his beautiful new room that night, "I love my room, but I really wanted the bus pillow."

I didn't understand the need. "The pillow doesn't even look comfortable, Heller." I told him.

"It does to me!" was his reply.

The next day, we returned to the store. The bus pillow was gone. I have to admit, I wasn't disappointed. A $20 pillow wasn't high on my priority list.

A few days later, we found ourselves in the store once again. As we passed through the children's' decor section, a delighted Heller ran to me with the bus in his arms! A shipment had come in!

Cuddle Bus came home with us that night. Like many children come to cherish their stuffed dogs and blankets, Cuddle Bus made his way into Heller's heart. Cuddle Bus became "the thing!"

Six years later, in 2007, when Heller joined his Father in Heaven, he left Cuddle Bus in my care. My need for Cuddle Bus surfaced a few nights after Heller left us, and every night since, as I fall asleep, I hold a worn out Cuddle Bus in my arms.

Heller was right. Cuddle Bus=Comfort.

On special occasions, Heller's brother Nicholas, whose Vroom Room now sports a similar decor as Heller's once did, enjoys a snuggle or two from Cuddle Bus. But, Nicholas knows that "Heller gave Cuddle Bus to Mommy."

I Heart Faces - Summer in Review

The Beach--My favorite place to capture sunshine. Thankfully, many of my friends decided The Beach was the place to be this summer too, so we captured sunshine together!

I love the challenges the beach offers my photography endeavour. Beach shots are tricky--the bright sun, reflective water, sand, and spray. But the rewards...oh the rewards! With so much practice, I'm convinced I could write a tutorial about capturing beach shots! (read: lots and lots of trial and error)

This week, I Heart Faces asked us to share our Summer in Review. I thought the best way to approach this would be to share my Summer Beach Excursions in Review. Each collage and map represents a new beach location (identified on the map). Each beach was different, and each beach was marvelous for different reasons.

And, since summertime isn't the only time to enjoy the beaches in Florida, we'll be back all year for more.

Since we took our vacation at Treasure Island this year, it gets two collages.

His Word Wednesday - Prayer Practice

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. ~ Romans 12:12

God is great and God is good,
And, I pray to God just like I should.
I know he watches me all day;
He guides me in my work and play.
And, just before I go to sleep,
I pray to God my soul to keep.
But, please God, I don’t understand,
Why Mommy makes me fold my hands.
It’s not easy to keep them still;
Wiggling and waving gives me a thrill.
So, God, I hope you will help me out,
And tell Mommy what it’s all about.

Well, Mommy looked it up. And, the answers she found make sense.

Our bodies are polarities. We have a positive side and a negative side. If we bring the sides together (as in folding our hands in prayer) we are able to neutralize our energy. This enables us to focus and center ourselves, and allows us to pray directly to God from our hearts.
